Since I was a young child, painting with my Finnish grandmother outdoors, I have loved making art. Over the years, I have experimented with many mediums, including acrylic and oil painting, sculpting, mixed media, charcoal, photography, and more. Most recently, however, I’ve delved into a technique referred to as Scratchboard art. This medium uses a paper with white china clay coated in black India ink.

When one scratches the black away, the white becomes visible, a reverse drawing method of sorts. Unlike sketching, or painting, the technique is not very forgiving, because once a line is drawn, it cannot be reversed, similar to sculpting marble or wood. This means the artist must be measured and intentional about every line, which makes the art that much more meaningful. I find the most meaning capturing animals and interactions found in the natural world.
